About this unit
Pythagoras' Theorem and Trigonometry: From c² = a² + b² to SOH CAH TOA is a complete nine-lesson unit for Year 9, aligned to Australian Curriculum v9.0 (AC9M9M03, AC9M9SP01, AC9M9A03, AC9M9N01). Australian spelling throughout.
Students start with the squares on the sides and a cut-out proof, then find the hypotenuse and shorter sides, test for right angles with the converse, and solve practical problems from ladders to roof trusses. They find the distance between two points on the Cartesian plane, then measure similar triangles to see why sine, cosine and tangent belong to the angle. The trigonometry lessons cover finding a side (unknown on top and underneath), choosing a method and finding an angle with inverse functions. The unit ends with angles of elevation and depression, including a printable clinometer for measuring real heights.
Inside:
- Teacher notes, a diagnostic check and nine detailed lesson plans with worked examples
- Support/Core/Extension worksheets for every lesson
- A cut-out proof, a print-at-100% ratio investigation, a 12-card "which tool?" card sort and a printable clinometer
- Nine exit tickets
- "Measure it, design it" measurement and design task (30 marks) with rubric
- 50-mark end-of-unit test with grade bands
- Full worked answer keys and a curriculum code table
- An editable 64-slide PowerPoint with speaker notes
